- Summary:
- "Although my subject is an American sexual renegade, his life and career help me focus on angles and radiations of universal risks and their consequences in gay subculture. Because Samuel Steward was a discontented literary academic, a daring tattoo artist, and a pornographer, I call him a three-way renegade. My poems contain vignettes (serious and comic) of his encounters with famous figures such as Gertrude Stein, Thornton Wilder, Alfred Kinsey, Andre Gide and Rock Hudson, as well as his literary masks used for disguise in an age of gross censorship and bias. My collection explores gay masculinity by revealing shades of anxiety, ecstasy, cruelty, beauty, narcissism, and negative capability in order to provide a nuanced portrait which neither glamourizes nor demonizes gay sex."-- Provided by publisher.
