- Biography/History:
- Marcus H. Hartig (or Hartvig; in Hebrew, מרדכי בן הירש האמיל, romanized as Mordekhai ben Hirsch Homel); born October 14, 1857 in Copenhagen (see his inscription in an 18th century illuminated parchment manuscript of Perek Shirah, then owned by his family, now The National Library of Israel Jerusalem Israel Ms. Heb. 4295=8, on the front flyleaf); he was also a calligrapher (his calligraphy on a manuscript he owned, today Jewish Community of Copenhagen Ms. 31).
- Summary:
- Marcus Hartig's alphabetization of the Hebrew Psalms, in his 1876 manuscript; every verse separated by opening letter, and every verse then ordered according to appearance in the Book of Psalms by chapter; the title statement (f. 1r) leaves the reason for the creation of this work unstated (possibly by commission). Written between two vertical bounding lines, creating margins (verses) and chapter and verse citation, in Hebrew letters, to the left margin of each folio side (every column headed with ק' and פ', for קאפיטל (kapital, or chapter) and פסוק (verse)); written in an Ashkenazic square script, vocalized; text written using a blue metallic ink. Title page decorated; "תהלים" written in a crosshatched pen calligraphy, with blank-outlined flourishes and dots inside letters; chronogram, monogram, and date written with gilt over letters (worn, and gilt partially faded); bound in contemporary rough black boards, with leather spine and board edges; endpapers with printed pattern.
