"The valley of the river Tigre, in north-central Mesoamerica, it has a long pre-Hispanic history, which begins with the emergence of the first societies and ends at the end of the Epiclassic. This double volume of the collection Cuadernos de Arqueología, Serie Occidente, It focuses on the period from the Late Preclassic to the Terminal Preclassic (400 B.C. and the beginning of our era), when the Chupícuaro culture was fully developed, until the evolutions of the Classic period (300 - 400 A.D.). The phenomena of boom and bust are analyzed from a macroregional perspective, in a context of important economic, demographic and cultural changes, particularly in their relationship with the rise of Cuicuilco and, subsequently, of Teotihuacán in central Mexico" (HKB Translation) --Tomo 1, back cover. The first volume, written by Brigitte Faugère, presents in three chapters the geographical conditions and occupational sequence of the region, summarizing the excavations and interpretations. El Mezquital-Los Azules was the main excavated site, located on the slope of a small plateau on the edge of the valley near the present-day town of Puriantzícuaro in southeastern Guanajuato. Volume 2 brings together the collaboration of several specialists with the results of the analysis of archaeological materials. We can divide this volume into four blocks: first, the data of the excavations and their dating; secondly, the analysis of ceramic objects; thirdly, lithic studies; and fourth, the chapters dedicated to the contexts and analysis of bone material. In addition to the excavations in El Mezquital-Los Azules, surveys were conducted in San Cayetano, Chamácuaro, Inchamácuaro and La Lomita. Special mention should be made of Grave 1 of San Cayetano, recently located in Chupícuaro, with the discovery of a newborn baby associated with a set of nine figurines and two vessels.
