Summary:

Tell Qasil is a small but fascinating archaeological site, located north of the Yarkon River, currently in the compound of Eretz Israel Museum in northern Tel Aviv. The excavations at Tell Qasile were the first archaeological excavations in the State of Israel (conducted between 1948 and 1950), and the site was further explored in later years. The settlement at Tell Qasile was founded during the second half of the 12th century BCE, and came to culmination during the second half of the 11th century BCE. The foundation of the site was probably initiated by Philistines, who cooperated with local Canaanite population and established the settlement as a port town, utilizing the Yarkon river for anchorage. Trade relations with Philistia, the hill country, Phoenicia, Egypt and Cyprus are reflected in the finds and are an indication of the local community's wealth. Three successive occupation strata yielding rich material culture belong to this period. Most interesting is the cult center, where three superimposed unique temples and related courtyards were exposed, complete with a collection of elaborate cult objects, some of them unique in shape and reflecting unconventional artistic depictions. Following severe destruction ca. 1000 BCE, the town was rebuilt, though on a smaller scale, and continued to survive until the mid 9th century BCE, when the site was abandoned for several centuries, except sparse occupation towards the end of the Iron Age (7th / early 6th centuries BCE). Parts of the site and its surroundings were settled later, from the Persian through the Crusader periods. Finds from these periods include a large isolated building and a unique well from the Persian period. Roman and Byzantine wine presses, Byzantine bathhouses, a Byzantine synagogue, an early Islamic khan or caravanserai, and a Crusader sugar factory. The story of the site ends with the First World War when it served as an Ottoman stronghold against the British army. This book tells the story of Tell Qasile in a fluent style and is lavishly illustrated.
