Broadside (horizontal chain lines), printed in three columns. The columns are separated from each other and the caption title by type ornament borders; imprint information appears beneath a ruled border at the foot of each column. The whole is enclosed within a border of floriate type-ornaments; another floriate type-ornament border appears beneath the engraved illustration.
Engraved rococo illustration at head of middle column depicting the statue of Christ housed in the Wieskirche (Steingaden, Germany), on a platform beneath which is depicted the church itself. "The Wieskirche ... was built to commemorate a wooden statue of the flagellated Christ first used in local religious processions. This marionette-like effigy was cared for by a pious woman named Maria Lory ... who claimed one day to experience a miracle: while praying before the statue, she looked up to see it crying real tears ... A small, simply decorated chapel was erected near Steingaden in the early 1740s ... [but] growing throngs of pilgrims quickly exceeded its capacity, for which reason the local ecclesiastics commenced with plans to erect a more commodious new church."-M. Yonan, "The Wieskirche," Studies in eighteenth-century culture 41 (2012), pages 6-8.
