Summary:
Color orgies 'thrown into the walls'. It was one of the many sour characteristics Thorvald Hellesen's first, and last, exhibition in Norway was met with in 1919. He never exhibited in his home country again, and was eventually forgotten. In Paris, Hellesen became part of the Cubist milieu at Montparnasse . Here he became acquainted with Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, Albert Gleizes and Fernand Léger. Around 1920, he finally achieved critical recognition. He became part of the Section d'Or, diligently participated in salon exhibitions and had pictures printed in Der Sturm and De Stijl. 'Among the Cubists, Hellesen is one of the most interesting', Amédée Ozenfant stated. With this richly illustrated research-based catalogue, Hellesen's Cubism is illuminated in full. His dialogue with Orphism, Crystal Cubism and Machine Cubism is examined, along with attempts to use Cubism in interior design and fashion. The book also examines Hellesen's social position, as an outsider in Norway, partly an insider in Paris, and later, an under-recognized pioneer in the Norwegian and Nordic avant-garde. Exhibition: The National Museum, Oslo, Norway (31.03. - 20.08.2023)
Farveorgier (?) slængt hen i væggene?.
