- Biography/History:
- Reform rabbi, ordained from the Hebrew Union College, 1887, Ph.D. from the University of Virginia, 1908; served as rabbi of Congregation Beth Ahabah, Richmond, Virginia, 1891-1945.
- Summary:
- Letter, dated Jan. 14, 1896, to Dr. Cyrus Adler, Washington D.C., mentioning raising funds of "the Jews in the U.S. for the benefit of the University", and that Calisch was promised historical matter in connection with the Jeffersons from "Dr. Randolph" (Wilson Cary Nicholas Randolph, 1834-1907, rector of the University of Virginia, great-grandson of Thomas Jefferson); Adler had spent years searching for the Jefferson Bible and related materials. Calisch notes that "last time I was in Charlottesville, Prof. Thornton [William M. Thornton] told me that Messers Oscar Straus and Jacob Schiff of New York had been interested and this fact to me ensures the success of the undertaking Messrs. Leo N. Levi of Galveston and Jos. Hirsch of Vicksburg". Written on Calisch's stationery; autograph below text.
