- Summary:
- The letters describe some of Cumberland's travel in England (especially to Warwick Castle) and refer to Romney's travel in Italy (the letters are addressed to Romney in Rome). Cumberland draws contrasts between contemporary art in England (James Barry, Benjamin West, Sir Joshua Reynolds, Sir Nathaniel Dance-Holland, etc.) and the art of Italian Antiquity and Renaissance which Romney was studying. He details some of the art collection of George Greville, 2nd Earl of Warwick, passes along Warwick's request that Romney purchase and paint works of art for him while in Italy, and mentions Charles Francis Greville and a letter of recommendation to Sir William Hamilton.
