- The letters were written by the two Misses James to their aunt while on an extended tour of the continent with their father and describe: Pavia, Milan, Genoa, La Spezia, Pisa, Lucca, Leghorn, Florence, Rome, Naples, Campania, Pompeii and Herculaneum, Terni, and Palestrina, among other places. The letters contain the usual lists of buildings and sites visited but also comment on local dress, paintings and sculpture, plants and flowers, etc.
