- Summary:
- Letter of introduction written for David Garrick during his 1763-1764 travels in Italy. Garrick, by the time of the continental journey he made with his wife, Eva Maria Veigel, was already an international celebrity. Algarotti and Baretti were both virtuosi with long connections to England and both assisted many English Grand Tourists. The Venetian Algarotti was a mentor of Frederick the Great, an important patron of the arts, and a long-time correspondent of Lord Burlington and other Englishmen. Baretti spent much of his life in England and published an important defense of travel to Italy, An Account of the Manners and Customs of Italy; with Observations on the Mistakes of some Travellers, with regard to that Country, 1768.
