Summary:
A description of late 18th-century Rome by the sculptor Banks, who lived in the city from 1772 to 1779, this letter discusses the art community there, mentioning: the sculptor Giuseppe Angelini; Henry Fuseli; the painter William Miller; Henry Tresham, and Tresham's sale of pictures to Frederick Augustus Hervey, 4th Earl of Bristol and Bishop of Derry; the landscape painter Solomon Delane; the mosaicist Domenico Cerasoli; the painter Robert Home; Alexander Day; Thomas Jenkins; and Maria Hadfield (later) Cosway. Bank also gives some details concerning casts for Hervey (e.g., Laocoon's head), pencils and other artist's materials he was shipping to Humphry in London, as well as the export of Bank's Caractacus to George Grenville, 2nd Earl Temple (the sculptor, commissioned during Lord Temple's 1774 Grand Tour, is still at Stowe today). The letter also contains some notes on contemporary opera. Banks lists many of the English travellers then in Rome: Charles Maynard, 5th Bart., and his wife, the notorious Anne Nancy (Parsons) Maynard; William Molesworth, 6th Bart.; a Penn, perhaps John; Francis Basset, Baron Basset; Sands, probably William Sandys, who travelled with Basset; James Stuart Mackenzie; and Sir Melmo Hadfield.
