- These notes in Evelyn's hand refer to the Grisons area of eastern Switzerland. Evelyn's diary does not contain a parallel passage but does indicate that he travelled through this area in May 1646 (cf. The Diary of John Evelyn, ed. E. S. De Beer in 6 volumes, 155, Volume 2, pages 509-515). The notes, which seem to have been made during or soon after travelling, mention history, geography, sites, wine, language, local customs, etc. Evelyn probably would have used notes such as these to compose the accounts in his diary.
