Summary:
The diary gives a long account of the travels of the author through the countries noted in the title, as well as in Austria, Germany, and the Low Countries. She was accompanied by Mr and Mrs Ryder Minister (or Minster) and, at times, by Lady and Sir David Kinlock. The diary reflects the author's interests: art and architecture; local customs; music, dancing, theater, and opera; antiquities and archeology; scenery, especially the ascent of various mountains; religious ceremonies; craft industries such as the tapestry works near Paris or the mosaic workshops in Rome; etc. Mrs Bewick was also fascinated by Napoleon and describes the monuments of Napoleonic France, stories of members of his family, places he lived, and other related matters; she has a similar interest in George Gordon, 6th Baron Byron. She notes many purchases of medals, coins, sculpture and casts, and prints, for her museum at Close House, Northumberland, of which she was mistress by the will of her deceased husband, Calverley Bewick. The tour passed through most of the principal cities of France, Switzerland, and Italy.
