- Summary:
- The diary describes a tour through France to Italy, then returning from Italy via Austria, Munich, and Switzerland, with comments on paintings, architecture, scenery, lodgings, social engagements, etc. Miss Tempest notes the effects of the Napoleonic era in Italy and comments on art, with some details about paintings which had recently been returned from Paris, where they had been sent by Napoleon Bonaparte. The longest descriptions are of Genoa, Florence, Rome, the Campagna, Naples and the surrounding towns, Pompeii (where the author acquired pieces of a mosaic), Milan, and Venice, with shorter commentaries on many smaller cities en route. It also mentions many of the other English citizens in these cities at the time.
