Summary:
The diary gives an account of travel in France, Switzerland, and Italy, apparently the author's third trip to the continent. He travels on the Seine to Rouen, giving much attention to the landscape, and accompanies the account of his itinerary with the literary commentary of an educated traveller ever in search of the picturesque. He makes a long stay in Paris, which he describes in detail, and then travels through France to Switzerland (in part I look on France only as a necessary purgatory through which Switzerland and Italy are then approached), where he comments on the Alps, Neuchatel, glaciers and rivers (the Aar reminds me for instance of a dashing - really clever - blue stocking without much taste - with more genius than application - and whose petticoats are not long enough to hide the color of her stockings - who has - in a desultory way - read a good deal - indiscriminately - without having the power always to choose the good & refuse the evil. but still, who is a fine creature & well worthy of admiration - at a distance.), and Lucerne (the same kind of air of antiquity that a bag wig and muffler would [give] to an oldish gentleman). The diary continues in the same original manner as it describes Haygarth's stay in the Lake Country of Italy and then his journey home via Switzerland, Germany, and the Low Countries.
