- Summary:
- "The study of environmental history emerged in the 1960s, inspired by the popularity of emerging environmentalist movements, but concerns about human intervention and interaction with the natural environment can be traced much further back. Environmental History: Conservation and Public Policy in America, 1870-1980 documents the emergence of these concerns from different aspects of conservation and environmental public policy in North America in the modern era. The archive concentrates particularly on the role of various government agencies, conservation organizations and individual actors who pioneered the study of the natural environment and campaigned for its protection. This varied collection will give researchers opportunities to explore many different types of materials related to the early development of conservation policies and practices from the late 19th century onwards. Scholars will find the papers of pioneering conservationists such as George Bird Grinnell and Joseph Trimble Rothrock, alongside material from government agencies such as the Bureau of Land Management and the Bureau of Reclamation who have formed and conserved national parks, forests and dams across North America, shaping the landscape it is today. This archive will give scholars a broad overview of the history of environmental conservation and policy in North America from a range of perspectives from the large national government agencies dictating the direction of legislation and environmental policies, down to the concerns of enlightened individuals campaigning on behalf of causes close to their hearts. Environmental History: Conservation and Public Policy in America, 1870-1980 is the first archive in an innovative new series that will explore the history of the environment and conservation efforts across the globe from the late 1800s onwards."--Publisher description
