- Summary:
- This volume of essays written in the last four years, somehow synthesize the main issues that the author has addressed in her research on what she herself calls "black worlds" in the visual culture of the modern era. A perspective that traverses time, forging an in-depth and comprehensive postcolonial art history. The texts collected in this book attest to Anne Lafont's commitment to the new perspectives of art history. Based on an intense performance between research, curatorship and criticism, the author draws an overview of the images and material culture of the so-called Black Atlantic, enabling new openings to rethink what African art is, as well as its uses and meanings in the context of colonization. A reference in both Europe and the United States, Anne Lafont investigates how various artistic productions are crossed by racial and colonial issues, aspects hitherto little considered in the scope of historiography. With an airy and original approach, she analyzes the role of resistance of art made by Africans and Africans in the period of enslavement, the racial markings present in crucial works of art history, and also discusses the most classic readings of history and the social sciences on the artistic production of the black worlds. The analyses contained in this volume also have the character of intervention, such as the articles on the role of public monuments in the midst of recent anti-racist demands and the project of restitution of African works undertaken by French museums.
