Summary:
With a joint curatorship between the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (Chile) and the Museo Nacional de San Carlos (México) the exhibition reviews 70 works belonging to both collections, to reflect on the ideas and principles of the Western canon that were established in the continent, through the circulation of images. It is a long and extensive project that, through works made in Europe between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, will allow a critical understanding of the collections and imaginaries that both museums share. For the selection of the pieces and the development of the museographic script, a curatorial team was formed, made up of Claudia Garay Molina and Mariano Meza Marroquín from Mexico, and by Gloria Cortés Aliaga, Eva Cancino Fuentes and Manuel Alvarado Cornejo from Chile. Participating in the research were Jaime Cuevas Pérez from Chile, and Paola López Eguiluz from Mexico. Productions understood as universal, elaborated by artists such as Tintoretto, Pontormo, José de Rivera, Francisco de Zurbarán or Andrea Vaccaro, among other names. They are originals and copies that circulated widely in American territories. They reflect the great exclusions, such as women. Such is the case with Joanna Vergouwen, the only female artist present in the exhibition, or a copy of a work by Ginevra Cantofoli, for more than 300 years attributed to Guido Reni.
