Summary:
The author, Julie Ávila do Brasil Almeida (1965, Guatemala, lives and works in Rio de Janeiro), challenge the reader to face the Hispano-speaking America tragic but common themes in the exercise of domination mediated by the figure of power that presents no limits in its excessive interest in control. The situational context takes us into the bowels of Mesoamerica, in different eras and spaces, examined by historical events, by our own memories, and by those borrowed by the analysis of the contemporary artistic thought of Guatemalan artists. The chapters involve the violence and genocide spearheaded by the dictatorial government of Efrain Rios Montt in Guatemala in the 1980's. "Julie brings reflections on the history of violence in Guatemala (country of which she immigrated with her family to Brazil in 1975), and the importance of art in the post-war context through the works of Aníbal López (A-1 53167) -artist now deceased-, Regina José Galindo, Jorge de León and Mario Santizo who welcomed us into their homes and shared diverse perceptions of those who deal with the echoes of a devastating policy." -Page [2]
