Summary:
In The Invention of Arthur Bispo do Rosário: Madness, Art and Cultural Heritage, Viviane Trindade Borges shows the different ways in which her character is delineated, according to the gaze of those who apprehend it, those who take it and institute it as an object. Understanding that madness and art are intertwined to compose the artistic capacity and genius of a subject considered unique, the author demonstrates how the figure of Bispo emerges as the result of discursive plots, produced by academic, institutional and artistic discourses, among others. Arthur Bispo do Rosário (b. Japaratuba/SE, 1909, moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1925 - d.1989) was a Brazilian visual artist who built his works following the paths of art and madness. In 1938, he "saw" Christ descend from heaven, towards the earth, surrounded by a court of blue angels. Soon after his vision, Bispo took shelter in a monastic. He was then sent to the Hospital for the Alienated, in Praia Vermelha, where he was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. When he did not improve, he was finally sent to the Juliano Moreira Colony, where he remained until his death in 1989. Bispo used everyday objects from the Juliano Moreira Colony to create his works, such as aluminum mugs, buttons, spoons, wooden boxes, shoes, bottles, among others. She also produced works through the technique of embroidery, using sheets, clothes and the threads of her uniform, obtained after unraveling them as a resource. Thus, his works are thought to represent the world on the day of Judgment, creating them in a faithful way at the behest of the voices he claimed to hear. For that day he also prepared a special cloak that he would put on to present himself before God.
