This book is part of the project Leaking women: mujeres que sostienen el techo, which explores the intersections between motherhood, research and artistic practice. Leaking Women had its starting point in our recent maternal experience and in the intuition that motherhood constitutes an experience that, in one way or another, puts creative wills to the test. Specifically, with the means of art we wanted to examine the notion that caring for and raising children is not something fortuitous, but rather emerges as a practice-"a routinized way in which bodies move, objects are handled, subjects are treated. The authors investigate the experience of caring for and raising children as a driving force for an exercise in self-affirmation from which to explore the tension between the habitus incorporated by social life (the should-be of mothers) and the indiscipline of our animal nature (The Unexpected Paths Artists Take). Their writings examine motherhood as an activity that is not fortuitous, but an exercise that requires learning certain rules of subsistence, investing in body management and discipline, containing violence, deploying intuition, and exposing oneself to risk. The texts in the book have been conceived as poetic explorations, collaborative compositions and essays. From their own particularities, they argue that without the care of some corporealities for others it is not possible to produce art or knowledge, practice equality or build places for emancipation. Authors Soledad Pinto and Paula Salas, are visual artists, academics, and mothers. Both work in artistic research.
