Summary:
What can contemporary Chilean photography tell us about our relationship with the landscape? And what do we do now with the images that have historically recounted that relationship? Rosario Montero proposed these and other questions to a group of people dedicated to the investigation and creation of the field of Chilean photography, thus gathering answers that, based on subjective experiences and as if in conversation, brought up diverse cases and reflections, new questions and some certainties. Among these, the use of nature photographs is recognized as supports to which senses of nation and identity are fixed that later determine our relationship with the territories. The appropriation power of the photographic image is also recognized, which, imbricated with neocolonial and patriarchal values, has determined the ways in which the photographic landscapes of Chile were constructed. A line marks the horizon is a theory book on photography written from a situated perspective, aware of its scope and open to dialogue. It is also a photographic essay and a review of fundamental readings of decolonial thought in relation to art and nature. Author Rosario Montero (Santiago 1978) is a photo-based artist. Her research has focused on the representation of landscape, identity and territory, being particularly interested in how power structures shape and affect image production and perception.
