Summary:
The edition presents the archaeological artifacts made by pre-Columbian indigenous societies that lived in the vastness of the entire American continent and that make up the collection of Rogério Cerqueira Leite, professor emeritus of Unicamp and chairman of the Board of Directors of the Centro Nacional de Pesquisa em Energia e Materiais (CNPEM). The work begins with two thematic essays that discuss the iconography of artifacts through an approach that moves between Art History, Anthropology and Archaeology. Next, introductory texts are presented on different regions of the Americas that include North America, Mesoamerica, the Andes, the Amazon and Central Brazil, and their respective cultures. These are followed by photos and descriptions of the formal and iconographic aspects of each of the 793 objects. For the most part, the Collection is composed of ceramic vases and figurines, alongside lithic artifacts, which stand out for their great aesthetic elaboration and their cultural representativeness. Editor Alexandre Guida Navarro is an archaeologist, professor at the Department of History of the Universidade Federal do Maranhão (UFMA) and coordinator of the Archaeology Laboratory of this university. He was a visiting professor at the University of Illinois, Chicago, and conducted research at the Smithsonian Institution (Washington), the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology (Philadelphia), and the American Museum of Natural History (New York). Denise Maria Cavalcante Gomes is an associate professor in the Department of Anthropology, Graduate Program in Archaeology of the Museu Nacional, of the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). She is a specialist in Amazonian archaeology, having conducted field research in the region of Santarém, Pará, for 20 years.
