Biography/History:
Ukrainian-Jewish medical doctor and writer, born in Kremenchuk, central Ukraine, immigrated to the United States in 1882; studied and practiced medicine in Philadelphia, 1886-1904, and then Denver from 1904 until his death; he is known for being one of the founders the Jewish Consumptives' Relief Society tuberculosis sanatorium, and editor of The Sanatorium.
Summary:
Letter from Dr. Charles David Spivak to Judge Mayer Sulzberger (on personal stationary, "Dr. C. D. Spivak, 1421 Court Place, Denver, Colorado"), mentioning the appearance of his article on medicine in the Bible and Talmud in the Jewish Encyclopedia (released in 1906) brought on inspiration to create a comprehensive work on the subject, with a great amount of material in manuscript already on hand; he asks of Sulzberger to peruse the article. Letter in 16 lines; autograph following letter text in lighter ink.
