American lawyer and author (Sieraków, Poland, 1833 - Louisville, Kentucky 1907); delegate to the 1860 Republican National Convention, elected vice-president of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, 1898; uncle of Louis Brandeis.
Summary:
Letter from Lewis N. Dembitz to Judge Mayer Sulzberger, stationery headed "LEWIS N. DEMBITZ, ATTORNEY AT LAW, Room 21, Trust Company Building, Telephone No. 876 Main, Louisville, Ky."; urging Sulzberger to present advance for a work Dembitz was writing to a committee - "my theory of the relations betwee[n] Babylonian Law, Pentateuch and Mishnah", and "comprising among other things my translation of the 'Code'". Letter written in nine lines (in two colors of ink); autograph following letter.
