- "Second [American] issue of the first edition"--Williams.
- The true first issue of Alice was published by Macmillan in London in 1865 in a print run of 2,000 copies. However, both the artist and author were unhappy with the poor quality printing and insisted that it be reprinted. Whereupon Macmillan sold the rest of the print run to Appleton in New York who then proceeded to publish a US edition using the 1866 American title page and the existing sheets from the 1865 English edition. This is the earliest obtainable issue having the Appleton "cancellans" title page.
