- Verdi's stupendous opera is rich in both spectacle and intimacy--as is John Dexter's production. It captures both the glory of the 16th century Spanish court and the haunted loneliness of its inhabitants. And so do our spectacular cast under James Levine's incomparable leadership. Plácido Domingo shines in the title role, the heir to the throne who is in love with Elizabeth of Valois (a passionate Mirella Freni in a triumphant return to the Met). The great Nicolai Ghiaurov is King Philip II, married to his son's fiancé and now realizing she has never loved him. This stellar cast is completed with memorable performances by Grace Bumbry, Louis Quilico, and Ferruccio Furlanetto.
