Summary:
The longest opera in the standard repertoire, Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg runs nearly five hours without intermissions, but in that time, it offers an uplifting and exuberant story about the power of love and art--and overflows with an abundance of sublime melody. In this performance from the 2021-22 season, Maestro Antonio Pappano returns to the Met for the first time in more than two decades to conduct the mighty Met Orchestra and Chorus in this grand comedy, leading a cast that features baritone Michael Volle as the benevolent cobbler Hans Sachs. The remarkable ensemble of Wagnerians also includes tenor Klaus Florian Vogt as the young knight Walther von Stolzing, who is determined to win the hand of the lovely maiden Eva, sung by soprano Lise Davidsen. Baritone Johannes Martin Krčanzle gives a scene-stealing performance as the nefarious Beckmesser, with bass Georg Zeppenfeld as Eva's father, Pogner, and tenor Paul Appleby as Sach's warm-hearted apprentice, David.
Contents:
Vorspiel
Da zu dir der Heiland kam
Verweilt! Ein Wort!
David! Was stehst?
Mein Herr! Der Singer Meisterschlag
Der Meister Tön' und Weisen
Was macht ihr denn da?
Seid meiner Treue wohl versehen
Das schönes Fest, Johannistag
Verzeiht, vielleicht schon ginget ihr zu weit
Am stillen Herd in Winterzet
Nun, Meister! Wenn's gefällt
Fanget an!
Seid ihr nun fertig?
Halt, Meister! Nicht so geeilt!
Johannistag! Johannistag!
Lass sehn, ob Meister Sachs zu Haus?
Was duftet doch der Flieder
Gut'n Abend, Meister!
Könnt's einem Wittwer nicht gelingen?
Das dacht' ich wohl
Da ist er!
Hört, ihr Leut, und laßt euch sagen
Jerum! Jerum!
Freund Sachs! So hört doch nur ein Wort
Den Tag seh ich erscheinen
Ach, Himmel, David!
Vorspiel
Gleich, Meister! Hier!
Am Jordan Sankt Johannes stand
Wahn! Wahn! Ueberall Wahn!
Grüss Gott, mein Junker!
Mein Freund, in holder Jugendzeit
Morgenlich leuchtend in rosigem Schein
Ein Werbelied! Von Sachs! Ist's wahr?
Das Gedicht? Hier liess ich's
Sieh, Evchen!
Hat man mit dem Schuhwerk nicht seine Noth!
Ein Kind ward hier geboren
Selig, wie die Sonne
Sankt Krispin, lobet ihn!
Ihr tanzt?
Die Meistersinger!
Wach auf! Es nahet gen den Tag
Euch macht ihr's leicht
Morgen ich leuchte in rosigem Schein
Verdammter Schuster, das dank ich dir!
Morgenlich leuchtend im rosigen Schein
Verachtet mir die Meister nicht.
