Israel Levy Lindenthal (Brighton 1796-London 1863), "reader and secretary to the New Synagogue" (title page of the English translation of the Pentateuch, co-authored with David Aaron de Sola and Morris Jacob Raphall (London: Samuel Bagster & Sons, 1844)); Albert Löwy (Lindenthal's son in law; Úsov, Czech Republic 1816-London 1908)), Samaritan scholar, secretary of the Anglo-Jewish Association, 1871-1889.

Summary:

This is a manuscript translation of selections from Julius Dessauer's Geschichte der Israeliten to English, written on interleaves in the printed edition (the paper of the interleaves (with a waterstamped grid, created by couching) were bound in after the completion of the printed book). Bound in before the endpaper is a letter from Ernest D. Lowy, 11 Ladbroke Terrace, to Mr. Hurst, dated 18 December 1921, stating that his father (Albert Löwy, 1816-1908) owned the book and rebound it (stamped "A. Löwy" on bottom of spine), and the manuscript was in his mother's father's handwriting, that of "the Rev. I. Lindenthal, minister at the Great S' Helens Synagogue" (the New Synagogue, London, on Great St. Helens Street). Lindenthal began the translation with the printed quote by Moses Mendelssohn (f. 1r), continued with the preface (f. 1v), "First period from the death of Alexander the Great [...] from 323 before the birth of Christ (343b) till 70 years after Christ (3828)" (f. 27r). The translation continues until p. 36 in the printed text (the last line: "[...] on account of insidious delusions, questions of the heathen inhabitants, that they might give him pertinent/relevant" (translated from Dessauer: "namentlich aber der Genesis (מעשי בראשית) und des Ezechiel (מרכבה) ein gewebe von nicht zu verstehenden [...]"; Dessauer ibīdem). The translation was possibly used for education or polemical purposes, likely to be published upon completion.
