Durante la primera parte del régimen de Franco se desarrolló una fuerte polémica acerca de la apertura cultural, cuestión que fundamentalmente giraba en torno a José Ortega y Gasset y a Miguel de Unamuno. Dos obras de este último acabarían en el Índice de Libros Prohibidos en 1957. La España de la época era un estado confesional, y así una controversia que se inició en ámbitos eclesiásticos concluyó adquiriendo carácter político. Notables personalidades del mundo de la cultura como Julián Marías, Pedro Laín Entralgo, Rafael Calvo Serer, Dionisio Ridruejo, Antonio Tovar, Gonzalo Fernández de la Mora, José Luis Aranguren o el Padre Ramírez protagonizaron una polémica en la que también intervinieron obispos y miembros de órdenes religiosas (dominicos, jesuitas y agustinos), socios de grupos religiosos (Opus Dei y Asociación Católica Nacional de Propagandistas), e incluso señalados miembros de la política oficial del momento, como Joaquín Ruiz-Giménez y Manuel Fraga. El libro de Antonio Martín Puerta aporta datos nada conocidos y desvela las fuertes tensiones que una polémica intelectual sobre dos personalidades tan relevantes de la cultura española generó a todos los niveles durante casi veinte años.
