The first decades of the 20th century were the setting for revolutionary changing in physics. The pillars upon which this discipline was established, from which so much success had come, identifiable as the mechanical, electromagnetic, and thermodynamic paradigms, came to a crossroads in the presence of new phenomena that could not be explained within those conceptual frameworks. This text contributes elements of comprehension of those moments of crisis for the underlying physics from two perspectives: the life and work of Paul Ehrenfest and a multidimensional analysis on the characterization of this discipline. Drawing closer to a multifaceted character like Paul Ehrenfest who does not appear to be brilliant in other histories of physics, offers an interesting approximation of the theme in question. Paul Ehrenfest was a scientist located at the center of powerful tensions that gave rise to the emergence of modern physics, for what is probably the greatest personification of the drama that took place in that discipline at the start of the 20th century. With him, we run into a singular character, a great teacher, a critic of his discipline and above all himself, and whose life was inextricably linked to the crucial themes of physics at the beginning of the 20th century. The story that we encounter in this book emphasizes by characterizing physics beyond its empirical and formal logic dimensions, recognizing its imaginative and creative elements and its multiple interactions with the philosophical, social, and cultural environment that converted in true intellectual adventure, but also in true civilizing force. The work that the reader has in his or her hands contributes to the construction of bridges between the sciences and the humanities, passing through borders and divisions that make a rich fountain of connections between different forms of thought, of comprehension, and of the search for meaning.
