- Summary:
- Dressed print of the betrayal of Christ engraved by Johann Bussemacher (active 1580-1613) after Maarten de Vos (1532-1603), captioned with a German translation of John 18:11-12, and matted in a glass-fronted wooden frame.
- Notes:
- Title devised by cataloger.
- The artist's and engraver's names, the imprint place, and the terminus post quem for imprint date are supplied from the bibliographic record for "Collection of 7 prints after Maerten de Vos' Life and Passion of Christ" in the Princeton University Library catalog. (The bookseller's description of this item gives imprint place and date: Allemagne, XVIIème siècle.)
- The print depicts the betrayal of Jesus Christ by Judas Iscariot, accompanied by a crowd carrying weapons, a torch, and a lantern, while in the right foreground Simon Peter holds an upraised sword over a fallen figure. All but the outlines of the figures' clothing and accoutrements have been excised from the original print. The remaining image has been dressed with multiple colored fabrics. Evidence of previous hand-coloring in brown ink is present. The print is matted in brown in a partially gilt black wooden frame (40 x 31 cm) with minor wear to gilding and damage to top left corner of frame.
