Summary:
Xantomonas is a large genus of Gram negative bacteria that cause disease in hundreds of plant hosts, including many economically important crops. Xanthomonas spp. can cause bacterial spots and blights of leaves, stems and fruits on a wide variety of plant species. Xanthomonas species can easily spread in water, movement of infected materials like seed or propagation plants and by mechanical means like infected pruning tools upon contact with a susceptible host, bacteria will enter through wounds or natural plant openings as a means to infect. To prevent infections, limiting the introduction of the bacteria is key. Some resistant cultivars of certain plant species are available as this may be the most economonical means for controlling this disease. This book is an excellent overview of plant diseases caused by Xanthomonas. Attempt has been made to provide readily available information on various aspects of Xanthomonas and plant diseases. The whole subject matter has been divided into 28 chapters. It is hoped that this book will be of great value to students, teachers and researchers in both classical and molecular plant pathology, as well as readers interested in plant bacterium interactions.
