Summary:
Since the early 1990s, Vietnam is experiencing rapid economic growth, initiated by the ??i m?i reforms. While these policies improved living standards for many people in Vietnam, the economic growth also intensified threats to the natural environment through rising pollution. At the same time, Vietnam faces the adverse effects of phenomena like global climate change.Against this background, Perceptions of Change in Vietnam looks at the cognitive aspects of human-nature relations in Vietnam: What is nature? What kind of changes do people notice in their local natural environment? How do they explain these changes? And where do they see their own responsibilities in this context? Based on fieldwork in a peri-urban hamlet in the Southeast of Vietnam, this qualitative study paints a diverse picture of the perceptions of the local natural environment.
