- "The main purpose of the book is to contrast the modality systems of English and Japanese, using Systemic Functional Grammar. The definition of modality is the region of uncertainty that lies between the polarity of 'yes' and 'no'. Our motivation is that this publication would be valuable from both perspectives of the modality studies in English and Japanese, and the Systemic viewpoint of the Interpersonal metafunction. Our methodology can be contrasted with Japanese linguists such as Takashi Masuoka, Harumi Sawada and Yoshio Nitta, who define modality as the speaker's subjective attitude which is located peripheral around the 'core' proposition, roughly speaking"-- Provided by publisher.
