Summary:
Machiavelli Had it Easy is an engaging text and guidebook for an emerging discipline, reconciling lessons learned in the markets and highlighted in a joint Governance Project. The five-hundred year milestone in 2015 since Machiavelli wrote Il Principe inspired a strategic look at patterns, and questioning what has changed in the traditions, principles and trending practices of governance. A closer look at the evidence proves that systems of the rule-of-law developed in principled pragmatism to avoid cycles of crises destroying value of time and money, and opportunities lost. - Despite the importance of the topic, few sources reconcile silos of business, legal expertise and regulatory public interests, and how all are now informed by cognitive science. Directors and managers come together from diverse backgrounds, cultures and interests around a boardroom table yet few understand the governance discipline, different from management and professions. The focus here is the importance of governance frameworks when organizations are increasingly hybrids of public, private and special interests. One conclusion is that self-interests are instinctive, reconciling best-interests is not.
