Summary:
With ongoing inpatient care at hospitals and nursing homes becoming more expensive every year, the focus has now shifted to providing this care at home. People nationwide have realized that, in situations which are non-life threatening, they can get a high level of continuing healthcare right in the comfort of their own home, and reap the additional benefit of getting the individual attention that goes with it. Helping to provide this care are dedicated people known as home health aides (HHAs). The elderly and infirm, people with disabilities, the cognitively impaired, and the chronically ill all need someone by their side to help them navigate the challenges they face in everyday life. The need for home health aides extends beyond these groups as those of any age, recovering from serious illnesses, accidents, or military service-related injuries, try to leave hospitals or rehabilitation facilities as soon as they can to save on medical costs. They turn to home health aides to help them complete their recovery at home. Family members try to help, but the dual task of caregiver and wage earner, and the pressure of meeting other day-to-day responsibilities, can be overwhelming. That is what makes the role of the home health aide so vital in today's world. As an HHA, you provide the necessary care for the person in need, and that allows those close to that person to continue their daily routine and keep life as normal as possible. Home health aides give family members the peace of mind of knowing that, even when they must leave the house, a concerned, well-trained person is there caring for their loved one.The trend toward home healthcare has opened up many opportunities, especially for home health aides. As an aide, you play a key role in making the lives of your clients and patients easier by providing a range of important supportive services.
From bathing and grooming to accompanying people to doctor's appointments or on a shopping trip, home health aides do it all. The goal is to maintain or improve the quality of life for those whose care is entrusted to you. The combination of an aging baby boomer population (those born between 1946 and 1964), people living longer, and soaring medical costs is placing a burden on the nation's healthcare system. To help meet the demand, there is a growing reliance on home health aides, and that trend is projected to accelerate in the years ahead. The need for home health aides is expected to grow 50 percent between now and 2018. That's faster than the growth anticipated for any other occupation in that period. Your specific work duties will vary with each person under your care. Assignments are often based on the amount of experience and training you have in the field. Those who have been working as home health aides longer are usually given patients whose needs are greater. Being a home health aide is a career for people who truly want to help others.
