Summary:
Members of ETA, the Basque revolutionary group, first engaged in political violence in 1961. The number of yearly armed attacks rose steadily throughout the 1970s and thereafter gradually declined. Why the violence? Were the bombings, killings, and kidnappings simply outflows of nostalgia and anomie (as some scholars and journalists suggest) disconnected from material interests? Did etarras (ETA members) attach impulsively without systematic thought toward achievavle aims and specific economic change? Combining insights from the collective-action school of political sociology with historical analysis, Zirakzadeh argues that there was a calculative, instrumental dimension to ETA's behavior which scholars too often neglect. A Rebellious People elaborates on the social and economic concerns of members of ETA and the Basque Nationalist party (PNV), recounts debates within ETA over the political effectiveness of armed struggle, and discusses the influence of local social movements and nationalist and non-nationalist ideologies on the etarras' thinking. A comprehensive account of the region's grass-roots politics, A Rebellious People will be important reading for students of Basque society. The book will also be valuable for scholars interested in modern nationalist movements, political radicalism, and the politics of economic development.
