- Summary:
- "Whom Fortune Favours is an up-to-date account of the history of the Bank of Montreal that is based on primary source research. The manuscript's analytical focus is on the leadership and strategies pursued by the bank over the ten generations of its evolution. Founded in 1817, the Bank of Montreal is not only Canada's oldest bank: it has come to enjoy iconic status in the panoply of Canadian nation-building. Very few other Canadian institution--the Hudson's Bay Company, the Canadian Pacific Railway and the RCMP, to highlight a few select others--have so intimately both paralleled and promoted the growth of this nation. The Bank of Montreal (BMO) has, in the words of the author, served as one of the "most compelling, continuous, long-range laboratories Canada has yet produced" for examining its national heritage. Around this "First Canadian" evolution, "multiple experiments" may be arranged and examined. With this in mind, the book attempts to celebrate--and critically examine--the bank's history on the occasion of its 200th anniversary in 2017 in the hope of distilling the essence of its evolution for posterity."-- Provided by publisher.
