Summary:
Pham Thanh Gion lived in a Vietnamese village under the Ngo Dinh Diem regime. He recalls having to enforce Diem's laws as a member of the South Vietnamese army, with methods that included arbitrary arrest, torture and executions. He describes the anger he felt toward Diem for his authoritarian excesses, and how this led him to join the Communist movement. He claims that many other soldiers in his area joined the revolutionary forces.
