Summary:
Visit London's Cabinet War Room and backyard bomb shelters in this look at defensive fortifications. From subterranean command centers designed to keep governments functioning during a nuclear war to store-bought models for family security, MODERN MARVELS® digs deep into the history of defensive fortifications. Bunkers first appeared in World War I, and they have been key components of every defensive strategy since then. This program travels the world to chronicle the developments that have kept bunkers (hopefully) one step ahead of the weapons that might target them. Visits to facilities like the Cabinet War Room, nuclear missile silos, the bunker in Berlin where Hitler took his life and a massive submarine base in Lorient, France show the incredible diversity of military bunkers. In contrast to these engineering marvels, the mass-market versions made during the Cold War are simple and unimaginative structures, often surprisingly flimsy, but they are important historical artifacts that speak volumes about people's fears during that tense era. BUNKERS concludes with a look forward, when advanced defensive technologies may bring the bunker out of the ground with their ability to protect any area.
