Summary:
Recent court cases (Ward v. Wilbanks et al., 2009, and Keaton v. ASU, 2010) have highlighted that some counseling students are struggling with the concept of how to bracket off their personal values when counseling clients whose values and/or behavior conflicts with their own. In many of these cases, the students are seeking to provide the best care for the clients by not treating them out of fear that they might not be competent or that their values may adversely influence the therapy they offer. This session will show how one counselor educator approaches just such a student who has stated in class that he would refer a client whose behavior he found violated his personal values. It will focus on approaching the student in a nonjudgmental fashion, seeking to offer the student new ways to think while respecting his value system and learning about the values of the counseling profession.
