Summary:
On May 18, 1980, a cataclysmic torrent of volcanic gas, steam, rock and melted ice tore across 50 square kilometres of ancient forest. Mount St Helens had erupted, destroying everything in its path. Ten years on, something was stirring in the ashes. Prehistoric bacteria has emerged to colonise the huge new skyscrapers of rock, and life has made an astonishing return to the blasted trees, pumice and mud-flows.
