Summary:

Uruguay is a small country, wedged between Brazil and Argentina in the southeastern part of South America. Its capital is Montevideo, a port city with beautiful beaches and weather; not only is it the country's largest city, it also is the largest natural fort on the Río de la Plata. There's a flare for European style here and plazas are open-air galleries for artists. Touring this impressive city, we visit Independence Square with its statue of General Jose Artigas, who fought against Spain for Uruguay's independence in 1813. At the end of the square is the Old Center, which includes the Teatro Solis. Also we see the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Legislative Palace and the 26-story Palacio Salvo. We learn the story of the German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee, which was scuttled off the coast here during WWII. Next, the Mercado del Puerto, the Old Port Market Building, displays a variety of goods and is a showcase for colorful handicrafts; many are linked to the local Creole culture. Also, since beef is a major industry in Uruguay, before leaving we visit a common eatery called a "sizzling barbeque stop."
