This program offers personal perspectives on the serious issue of women who may be at high genetic risk for developing breast cancer. First Stefanie Jeffrey, M.D., Asst. Professor of Surgery at Stanford University addresses questions she hears about genetics from her patients; then Barbara A. Brenner, J.D., the Executive Director for Breast Cancer Action, San Francisco, who is also a breast-cancer patient, shares why she chose not to have genetic testing done; next Sherry Pedersen, a pediatric nurse who has ovarian cancer, discusses cancer within her family; June Peters, M.S., a Genetic Counselor at the National Center for Human Genome Research, discusses the importance of trust with health-care providers; Nancy Press, Ph.D., Assoc. Research Anthropologist at UCLA/School of Medicine, addresses fears women have about breast cancer; lastly, David M. Spiegel, M.D., Professor of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Stanford, talks about making the best use of the genetic information to help people adapt and make good decisions about their lives. The program closes with the panel addressing questions.
