- Summary:
- Is it possible to have a marriage and familial system where the woman rules above all matters? How is peace and harmony achieved in such matrilineal community? Can modern society learn anything from the tribes of the Khasis, Garos and Jaintias? The central Indian states of Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh are host to over 50 major tribes. The Bastar district of Chhattisgarh has 35 tribes residing in it. Marriage is the most important social institution of these tribes and determines their kinship patterns. In THE WOMAN RULES, the sexual preferences and marriage practices of three different tribes, Muria, Baiga and Abujh Maria are presented. We find that though these tribes practice mainly monogamy and are patrilineal in nature, the women are sexually uninhibited and can assert their sexual preferences. These societies, because of their unusual openness regarding the matter of sex and marriage, have been able to uphold the values of human love and its physical expression in its pure form, devoid of jealousy, adultery and oppression.
