Summary:
A new study of satellite data covering a twenty-year period - the most comprehensive research of its kind ever undertaken - suggests that, in extreme weather conditions, wind speeds have increased by 10 per cent and wave heights have grown by nearly 7 per cent. The research could inform the design of coastal buildings, structures and shipping. But as Tanya Ha reports, this could also adversely affect the cycle of heat exchange between the sea and the atmosphere.
