- Summary:
- The Through West Mail, probably best known of all Australia's night mail trains, left Sydney nightly for its 289 mile run, and was steam hauled until 1967 when all steam operations out west ceased forever. On the Queen's birthday weekend of 1989, this spectacular long gone steam event was recreated--but this time with an added attraction never seen in the train's 100 years of regular running. The recreation of the Night Mail was hauled by the world-famous 4472 Flying Scotsman and Australia's famous C-38 Class Pacific 3801; and triple-heading for part of the journey was the S Class Suburban Tank 3112.
