Summary:
This program addresses the isue of affirmative action in Asian and African American communities through an interview and open forum discussion., Host Stephen Curwood and guests Peter Chan (manager of Boston's Chintatown Little City HAll) discusses the recent court mandate in Boston defining African Americans and Hispanics as minorities and Asian Americans as Caucasian, followed by a panel discussion moderated by Melvin Moore. Panel debates the question, 'Is affirmative action a policy of reverse discrimination?' with James Kelly (spokesperson for the South Boston Information Center) and Shelia Martin (community advocate for the MAssachusetts Social and Economic Opportunity Council). Also present for the panel are journalists John Robinson (the Boston Globe) and William Hoar (the American Opinion Magazine). Additional segments include an interview with African artist Godwin Okoro conducted by Eduardo Diz, the 'Say Brother News,' and the 'Community Calendar.'
