Summary:
The film opens with Nien, a poor and starving young woman, stealing food. She is rescued by Mr. Choowit, a trash collector, who hides her from a policeman. Choowit brings her to his place, a shanty home that he invites her to share with him. Nien turns the shanty into a home, and love blooms with songs and music. Their sweet existence abruptly ends when Choowit is called to military service. Nien takes over Choowit's garbage collection job, disguising herself as a man. When a rich lady drops her bracelet on the street, Nien returns it and finds the woman deeply appreciative. The woman insists Nien live with her and adopts her like a daughter. A Western-educated doctor comes courting, bringing his father with him. The doctor asks for Nien's hand in marriage. But she reveals a stunning truth about his father that shocks the doctor. Off on the war front, Choowit is wounded and returns home. But all is not well as the fate of our two characters comes to a head. Based on a play by well-known author Suwat Woradilok, the story was used in a TV drama before becoming a film. This is the first 35mm colour film to be shot in Thailand. Awards/Festivals: 15th Singapore International Film Festival, 10th Pusan International Film Festival.
